[Blog] Why Getting Rid of Keane is Wrong
Written by superblueflude on Wednesday, 21st Oct 2009 13:17

OK, so hands up those of you who were at the game last night, thinking at half-time, what a performance, what amazing passing, amazing skill, team work, solid defending etc etc. Now hands up to those of you who after the game, booed the players, booed the manager and booed everyone else except themselves.

I have a question for you boo boys - what would getting rid of Roy Keane achieve? Another manager will sign another striker, will be one thought, he'll create confidence, is another.

Fair points but let's look at the the match last night, and of that against Swansea and every game following that defeat to Newcastle.

Our defence is becoming more solid, our midfield are creating more chances, our strikers are shooting more at goal. Every game has brought an improvement and last night games sums up how a lack of confidence hurts a club. As soon as the board went up the panic set in, four minutes to keep this lead, that's all that was going through the mind of not only every fan but every player on that pitch.

Yes, Watford scored and yes another two points were lost, but one thing that can't be taken away is the way we played, the improvement, the togetherness of the squad.

What is wrong with you boo boys? Yes, it wasn't a win but surely you can see the win is coming. Keep faith. Think of it this way, if we were top half and last night happened no one would blink an eyelid, people would have said Town played well all game and been robbed, but that's not we're reading, it's the same story of Keane's got to go, he's useless etc.

But seriously everyone, what else can Keane do, the team was perfect last night, nothing can be faulted, yes chances weren't taken but we had chances to miss, something we didn't create before the Newcastle game.

People says Keane's man-management needs questioning. Why? Because of what the tabloids say about him? Being honest and telling a wantaway player that we own him and we will sell him if we want to (Lisbie), that's not bad player management that's honesty!

Look at David Wright. Yes, he was dropped, trained with the youths and now look, he's back, stronger than before, working hard day in day out.

Garvan's the same, he's improving and working hard. He will get back in the team. Don't forget Keane worked under Sir Alex and I'm sure Sir Alex did the same thing to players at that club, it's called a reality check, something the Town players needed. No more going through the motions, getting through games thinking as long as I don't look bad I don't need to look good either.

Hard work and commitment is what is needed and that is what Keane is bringing out from these guys. We don't need a new defender, we don't need a new striker, we need to keep going and on Saturday I truly believe it's three points and if not, then I will be happy with a point because soon enough that first win will come and our run will start and that includes being unbeaten.

So, now it's two games unbeaten, on Saturday let's make it three, they all count.

Why is getting rid of Keane wrong? The simple answer is - he's doing the best that any other manager would do, and you can see that from the performance last night. Keep the faith boo boys, shut up and support, and we will be fine.

Great Article
I stayed and applauded the performance last night, to be honest i didnt hear any booing after the final whistle if there was it certainly wasnt deserved as we played really well, ok we did sit back abit at the end of the second half and it did cost us but i think that was always going to happen going into the last 10 minutes with a 1-0 lead, but you could see how disappointed the players were at the final whistle, Booing the team gets you know where

Keep the faith!!! COME ON YOU BLUES !!!

I'm not a Keane "boo-boy" but where was this article last season when Magilton was getting unfairly slated whilst we were actually in the right half of the table?

Lightning I was disgusted with the way many of our "fans" treated Magilton, however, I think the difference is that Jim had had time to build a side in his own image and it was becoming clear that he wasn't going to be able to take us to the next level. Keane on the other hand has only had 13 games (the two last season don't count) and we can't yet judge where he might take us.

In response to the article, there was about 3 seconds of mild booing in the robson on final whistle, which I would put down to frustration and discontent at the result, closely followed by a standing ovation and a chorus of "we love you ipswich", which I would put down to pride in our players and enthusiasm for the performance.

Last night convinced me that there is every chance we will now fight our way out of this mess.

Excellent article. Lightning boy - the last poster hit the nail on the head. Like it or not, Jim was given three FULL seasons at Ipswich and unless I am mistaken failed to make the play-offs. When sacked, the season was over with five games remaining.

Jim has even admitted that he inherited Man for Man a stronger squad at QPR than he left at Ipswich - a team that HE built. Therefore, it goes without saying that Roy is having to off-load a squad that even Jim accepts is not good enough. Roy has made mistakes - Healy, Delaney and possibly Martin. But he has also bought well with Leadbitter, Edwards and Rosinior.

The performance last night was excellent. Better than anything we saw last season (IMO). If we had won, then everyone would have said wow! BUT we had that bottom of the table luck - conceed and not win.

Yes we need a striker. Yes Trotter isn't good enough and yes we need experience at the back - but Roy is working on it.

I am not for booing the players or the manager, so didn't boo Jim - nor will I Roy.

We need to get behind the side - it will take time to build.

Legend. Thanks for writing this. Hope many fans read and it resonates. Keane is the man. He is a sport pyschologist at work, and he will win. His weakness might be constantly having to justify himself to a hungry press. But if you switch off the media hype, we have a club far more galvanised than under Jim, and he's bought in a super player in Leadbitter who we'd not have had a look in on signing without Roy.
KEANO!

The only booing I heard was directed at that wally with the whistle....which he didnt blow quicker enough at the end of the game which was in complete contrast to the rest of the game when he was so eagre to blow it everytime a Town player put in a challenge.

Good article and agree, except that we do need for a new striker.

Very good article, nothing else that I can add really. Except maybe just something a mate of mine said at the game last night - IF Keane went (sacked or walked), then his replacement must absolutely be the right man. Because if he wasn't, we wouldn't have another chance to save our season, especially if the replacement failed to make any impact and subsequently became the target of the boo-boys and maybe even lost his job too! How many managers do we want in a season? Do we want to be Southampton or Leicester of 2 or 3 years ago with a revolving door for managers?

We have to stick with Keane - the improvements are becoming very clear to those of us that go to the games, or at least follow them with a fair and open mind (as opposed to yelling 'KEANE OUT' at every opportunity). To change manager now would be short-sighted, misguided, and absolute suicide.

KEANE IN!!!

p.s. at time's people were singing 'Keano' as the performance meritted it. It was total injustice when watford scored. Why then Boo?

Brilliant article, fully agree and I believe we will get the three points saturady, whats more I will be there to see it along with the corps of our away support who do just that and support, the team and the manager.
As already pointed out 'Lightsoutboy',Jim was given 3 full seasons not months. Keano will turn it around, that first win will set the ball rolling Im sure.
Come on you Blue Boys

Yep, we played so well we couldn't even beat Watford at home. Certainly an improvement that. Staying with Keane would be suicide, not keeping him.

There aren't any boo boys. I havent heard one single boo directed toward the manager so you made that bit up.

The win will come. Keane has made so many changes to the side since he took the reigns players have got to get to know each other on the pitch. I think the scale, speed and manner in which Keane made changes to the team was not perfect and could have been managed slightly better. But what we are seeing now is teething problems and there is no question that Keane should stay and be allowed to get it right. The underlying signs are that it won't take long.

I meant to say staying with Keane would be suicide, not getting rid of him.

YLLightning boy i agree - Magilton never got us in the playoffs but never led us to bottom of the lague!

People on here are going, mad over a fcukin 1all draw with watdford!
They are all still blinded by the name Keane.

I was there last night and gutted like everyone else. I heard the booing which seemed to come from the lower Britannia stand and directed at the officials. Nobody would boo the team or the manager after such a super performance.

i see that UEFA81 still thinks this is the end of the 70's and early 80's, this isnt the robson era, we arent invincible at home anymore not being able to beat watford at home isnt the end of the world as this league proves year after year most of the teams are fairly even, we are getting better each game, Keane is still the right man for the club!! COYB !!

Good article, and I stayed and applauded the players for the performance last night, although I didn't hear any boos in the Britannia Stand, unless they were later after I left and maybe meant for the referee.

The one thing that stands out for me is that, like Magilton, Keane still needs a 20 goal a sesaon goalscorer, and without one we are putting too much unnecessary pressure on our team defending. If we had been 3-0 up last night when Watford scored no one would have worried.

The problem I have is by the time we get a goal scorer, in January if we are lucky, then I fear it may be too little, too late for this season.

UEFA81 - How is it an improvement? IT CERTAINLY BEATS GETTING THUMPED 4-0 AT HOME AS HAPPENED NOT TWO HOME GAMES BEFORE THAT!!! If you've been following other laegue results you'll notice in their last game Watford beat Boro - a team currently 1 point from the league leaders. They came in to last night with a bucketload of confidence.

callumgarryskeemer - You say people are blinded by the name Keane but I think you boo boys never liked him in his playing career and are quite happy to believe the over-inflated stories of tabloid hacks and idiots like Dwight Yorke instead of seeing that we have someone who can rebuild this club from a bunch of half-hearted mercenaries in to a professional outfit who can challenge for promotion. Yes mistakes were made at the start of the season but nowhere near being cut adrift yet!

All in all, you anti-Keaners just keep spouting the same worn-out old lines without adding anything new to the discussion - and you wonder why no sensible human being here takes you seriously?!?!?!

i could never boo the team because that's like booing ourselves. Last night i shouted at the ref because i thought he was poor but to boo th eteam when they played so well is madness. We were the best team by miles last night and if that had been our first home game we'd have all gone home buzzing with excitment. ok we havent played great but teams arent going to let us walk over them just because we're Ipswich. But performances like this every week will bring us results so get behind the team come what may

There were some idiots booing in the Sir Bobby upper section, not that many of them & not for many seconds, however it was enough to make me feel sick to the core, what ever is the problem with these fools, could they not see the terrific effort that the players made last night ? did they not notice the individual skills & the really attractive passing ? we played some great football & should have won easily, I am most impressed with this article, well done! I agree with most of it but would still like to see a quality striker join us, Roy Keane is a Football Professional, an honest caring man & I believe, totally devoted to his task at our football club, he will eventually be acknowleged by all as being one of the best Managers in the game.
